"I'm here for the inauguration of the school named after Piersanti Mattarella. I was 18 at the time, and I remember that dramatic photo of President Sergio Mattarella picking up his brother, who had been murdered by the Red Brigades, and pulling him out of the car."

This is the gaffe by Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara, who in Irpinia attributed responsibility for the 1980 crime that killed the then President of the Sicily Region to the Red Brigades rather than the Mafia.

After the inevitable criticism and controversy, the minister himself responded in a statement to ANSA: "I have declared myself a 'victim of the mafia' 20 times, as is evident in every speech I've given. It was a slip of the tongue, a despicable act of profiteering against me."
