Tragedy on the runway at Bergamo's Orio al Serio airport : Andrea Russo , a 35-year-old from Calcinate, died after being sucked into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 that was taxiing on the runway for take-off to the Spanish airport of Asturias with 154 passengers and six crew members on board.

A voluntary gesture, according to some witnesses who saw him throw himself into the left engine of the aircraft.

It was 10:35 a.m. on a day when many people were leaving for vacation from an airport that handled 17 million passengers last year. After the accident, flights were immediately grounded, and for a couple of hours there were no more takeoffs, with landing planes being diverted to other airports.

According to the reconstruction by the border police and the Bergamo prosecutor's office, Russo reached the parking lot in front of the airport at the wheel of his red Fiat 500, some say driving the wrong way . The 35-year-old abandoned it in the middle of the parking lot and from there entered the arrivals area, which is on the ground floor. He immediately reached the airport runway, apparently through an emergency exit. Airport staff and police attempted to stop him in vain, but the man made a furious move toward the Airbus.

Now we need to figure out who's responsible for the flaws that allowed the 35-year-old to reach the track, and the judiciary will decide on this.
