No accidents, but car insurance still increases: "Terrible data."

No accident, the insurance expires, it's time to renew and here's the surprise: the car insurance premium goes up.
"This is a terrible figure," says Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers Union, commenting on the IVASS data according to which the price for contracts stipulated in the first quarter of 2025 averaged 410 euros, down from December 2024 (419 euros), stable compared to January 2025 (408 euros) and February (411 euros), while it rose by 4.1% on an annual basis.
"What matters, in fact, is not the comparison with December 2024, which is not homogeneous, but with the first quarters of previous years. And in this case, unfortunately, not only has the car insurance premium increased by 4.1% compared to the first quarter of 2024, when it stood at €394.3, but the level reached is a record not seen since the first quarter of 2017, when it was €411.8, a full eight years ago. Furthermore, the surge seen since 2023 is worrying, when not only was there a reversal of a virtuous trend, but premiums also soared with serious and alarming speed, solely for the purpose of maintaining profits unchanged compared to inflation, certainly not due to the cost of claims or accidents," Dona continues.
The association calls for "Minister Urso to intervene. For years, for example, we have been calling for a remedy to the deterioration of Preventivass, the public comparison tool that, unlike its predecessor, only compares quotes for mandatory basic coverage, without the option to add the most commonly used additional coverage, from fire to theft, from roadside assistance to weather events, which are the ones that affect the majority of customers. Without a real ability to compare policy prices comprehensively and effectively, there can be no real competition," Dona concludes.
