A contaminated dishwashing detergent may have been the carrier of the bacteria that led to the deaths of two premature babies who were hospitalized at the San Maurizio Hospital in Bolzano.
This was reported by the General Management of the South Tyrolean Health Authority (Asdaa), which today issued a directive to suspend the use of the potentially contaminated detergent in all hospitals in the province .
The decision was made, according to a statement from Asdaa, "upon instructions from the judicial authorities, through the NAS, as a precaution and pending further investigation ."
Meanwhile, the situation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit remains unchanged. The health conditions of the 10 premature babies hospitalized remain stable . The Obstetrics Department, as well as all other departments and services at the Bolzano hospital, the company reiterates, "are not affected by this particular situation and are operating regularly and at full capacity."
The two premature babies died within hours of a bacterial infection: one on Tuesday, the other during the night of Wednesday . Both were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital in the South Tyrolean capital.
