The NAS (National Anti-Corruption and Prevention Agency) continues its investigation into the origin of the bacterium that caused the deaths of two premature babies last week in the neonatal intensive care unit of Bolzano hospital.

The positive test, as far as we know, was found in the spout and in the dispensers of the detergent used to wash teats and bottles.

Investigators are currently considering several hypotheses, and it's necessary to wait for the analysis to be completed to resolve any doubts.

The bacteria that causes Serratia marcescens infection could have been brought in from outside, that is, by someone already contaminated who used the dispensers. Another possibility is that the dispenser was already dirty.

Nor can it be ruled out, at this time, that the bacteria was already present in the detergent before it was opened. Finally, the bacteria could have developed due to improper use of the product, such as incorrect storage or the addition of contaminated water. These are all hypotheses that will be clarified in the coming days with the completion of the NAS analyses.
