Three young Sardinian soldiers from the 151st Sassari Infantry Regiment were savagely beaten in Milan.
The two soldiers, originally from Ogliastra and a female soldier from Oristano , who were engaged in the Lombard capital as part of Operation Safe Streets , were apparently targeted by a group of seven or eight people as they were leaving a nightclub.
According to the Milanese newspaper Il Giorno, the three, off duty, had just left a club on Corso Garibaldi and were looking for a car-sharing service to return to the barracks.
Along the way, however, in Largo La Foppa, they were allegedly approached by another group of young men—Italians, possibly from Puglia— who began teasing them for their Sardinian accent . The three soldiers then attempted to walk away without responding, but to no avail. They were insulted and then attacked, eight against three, beaten with kicks and punches, and also hit with a telescopic truncheon, a crowbar, or a crutch . After the beating, the group dispersed and the three raised the alarm. The Carabinieri and 118 emergency personnel responded to the scene. After transporting them to the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, doctors gave the three young soldiers a prognosis of between two and thirty days, having found a head injury, a fractured nose, and the female soldier also a fractured coccyx.
The Carabinieri's investigations to identify those responsible are continuing, including the analysis of video surveillance cameras , both those in the area where the attack took place and those inside the club, on the hypothesis that the "pack" was also present inside the club where the three Sardinian soldiers had begun the evening.
