«At a historic juncture marked by unprecedented challenges for humanity, it is essential that Washington and Rome, also within the Atlantic Alliance and through participation in the United Nations and other multilateral fora, continue to work together for peace , security and prosperity for their respective peoples and for the entire world».
This is what we read in a message sent by Sergio Mattarella to Donald Trump, on the occasion of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of American independence.
"This year, the Fourth of July holiday takes on exceptional significance for the United States of America, as it marks the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of independence. I therefore wish to extend to the friendly American people the warmest congratulations of the Italian Republic and myself," the message continues.
The Head of State underlines how the 4th of July has become over time "a shared heritage of those who recognize themselves in the principles of freedom, democratic representation and universal protection of the rights of every man, including in the pursuit of a dignified and happy life" .
"Starting from these founding ideals," Mattarella writes, "the Declaration of Independence of 1776 inspired the political and civil path of the United States, as it does of many other peoples on every continent. These noble aspirations have also been and remain a point of reference for a vision of relations between states shaped by law, cooperation, and support for international institutions born in the wake of the tragedies of the last century."
