" We are not at this point yet , the peace negotiations have not even begun . Talking about what will happen as solutions is totally out of place ." This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella , in an interview with the Japanese broadcaster NHK, answering a question about the possible sending of Italian peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.

"It is clear that a peace solution must be surrounded by guarantees that hostilities will not resume and therefore a guarantee of security. And since Russia is much more powerful and much more armed than Ukraine, this means guarantees of security for the security of Ukraine," he then added. Specifying that "it is necessary to reach a solution that does not mortify either party but that guarantees Ukraine and that is a peace in accordance with international law."

The head of state then underlined how in Europe there are concerns for which "it is thought that it is necessary to strengthen European Defense. And this is a natural development of European integration that has continued in these decades".

Answering the reporter's question about the attempts of the USA and Russia to stop the conflict, the head of state insisted on the concept that it is necessary to reach "a just and lasting peace that is neither fragile nor transitory but that is a solution based on the norms of the UN Charter, on international law and that is accepted by both parties".
