After 26 years of prison and house arrest, the mafia repentant Gaspare Spatuzza is back free .
Spatuzza, 59, has in fact obtained conditional release and for five years he will have to observe certain prescriptions, such as not "habitually" associating with offenders or not leaving the province in which he lives without authorization.
Spatuzza was arrested in 1997. Sentenced to life imprisonment for the massacres organized by Cosa Nostra, after 11 years in prison he decided to collaborate with the magistrates.
Among other things, his statements served to send Matteo Messina Denaro to trial for the massacres of Capaci and via D'Amelio, a proceeding still in progress before the assize court of appeal of Caltanissetta.
During Spatuzza's detention, he began a process of religious conversion and asked for forgiveness from the victims.
