A young Maghrebian farm worker was abandoned in front of the hospital in Pescina (L'Aquila) with a serious wound to his leg caused by an agricultural vehicle used for harvesting carrots.

The episode, made public only today by Flai-Cgil of the Province of L'Aquila, was reported by the newspaper 'Il Centro', which relaunches the alarm on working conditions in Fucino, in particular for foreign workers.

The young man was left alone after the accident, without any assistance from his employer . He was then transferred by medical personnel to the nearby emergency room in Avezzano and underwent surgery that put him back on his feet.

"It is yet another episode that shows how dramatic the conditions of day laborers in our region are. It is no longer a question of individual cases, but of a system that unloads the burden of profit on the skin of the last", denounces the union, announcing legal and awareness initiatives.

The recent episode turns the spotlight back on gangmastering and illegal work in the agricultural sector, with particular reference to the Fucino area, where dozens of migrants are employed in conditions often bordering on legality. Flai-Cgil speaks of an "organized system of exploitation", urging urgent intervention by local and national institutions.

The union requested and obtained international protection for the young man who arrived in Marsica by makeshift means , after weeks of travel from Turkey and was hired for about three months. The authorities are reconstructing the dynamics of the incident and verifying responsibilities.
