A large boulder, which suddenly broke away from a rock face adjacent to regional road 521, which connects Morro Reatino to Leonessa, in the province of Rieti, struck a car carrying a family following a hearse to reach their mother's funeral.
According to the initial reconstruction of the incident, provided by firefighters and 118, the boulder hit the roof of the vehicle, smashing into the passenger compartment and fatally injuring a sixty-six-year-old woman who was inside: she was the daughter of the elderly woman for whom the funeral service was being held.
The boulder then hit other cars in the procession, injuring at least seven other people.
