Tensions are brewing between the Supreme Court and Minister Nordio over justice reform and the independence of judges.

"The judiciary's concern is to ensure that the independence and autonomy of the judiciary, as a cornerstone of the constitutional system, remains effective," stated First President of the Supreme Court Pasquale D'Ascola at the inauguration of the Judicial Year, emphasizing that "the autonomy and independence of the judiciary are not a privilege, but are prerequisites for judges to always be impartial." A not-so-veiled jab at the reform signed by the Keeper of the Seals (WHAT IT PROVIDES FOR ).

Nordio's response was prompt, stating that "it is blasphemous to argue that the reform tends to undermine the principle of independence and autonomy of the judiciary."

The Attorney General of the Court of Cassation Piero Gaeta also intervened in the case, underlining that «the clash between judges and politicians has reached unacceptable levels».
