On Sunday, March 22nd and Monday, March 23rd, Italians will be called to vote on the confirmatory constitutional referendum on the justice reform, which addresses the structure of the judiciary and introduces, among other things, the separation of careers between judges and public prosecutors and the establishment of a new High Disciplinary Court.
THE REFORM: WHAT IT PROVIDES FOR
Voting will take place on Sunday and Monday, as established by the election decree, which confirmed the two-day polling schedule.
Polls will remain open on the first day of voting from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., while on Monday they will reopen at 7:00 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. Then the counting of the ballots will begin.
Overall, the electorate is made up of approximately 50 million people , 5 million of whom are students and workers who permanently live far from their municipality of residence. This segment of the electorate has sparked controversy between the majority and opposition forces, as the government, despite its previous efforts for the 2024 and 2025 elections, has decided not to include non-residents in the decree defining Election Day.
As for voting by citizens residing abroad, Italians registered with AIRE (the registry of Italians residing abroad) will be able to regularly vote by mail.
The referendum is confirmatory: it therefore does not require a quorum to be reached.
The usual electoral silence is expected on Saturday.
