Find real resources, starting with at least one billion euros currently blocked on a non-urgent project like the Strait of Messina bridge ; suspend taxes and contributions for affected families and businesses ; accelerate land safety measures; immediately fund the Adaptation Plan; and approve the law against land consumption, which has been stalled for over ten years.
This is what the Democratic Party is proposing to help with reconstruction in Sardinia , Sicily, and Calabria, which were hit by Cyclone Harry in recent days . These proposals were also confirmed by Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
Yesterday, during her visit to Sicily, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained that the €100 million already allocated by the Council of Ministers is "only the first tranche" and that the government is working to draft a decree to make additional resources available.
Another option on the table is accessing EU funds . In this regard, the Vice President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto , reporting that he had met with the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci , and the presidents of the regions of Sicily, Renato Schifani , Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto , and Sardinia , Alessandra Todde , stated: "I confirm the European Commission's maximum commitment to guarantee effective and concrete support to offer timely responses to the communities of Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia affected by Hurricane Harry, with Italy able to apply for the Solidarity Fund ."
And Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani also confirmed that Italy intends to "request help from the European Solidarity Fund" for Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia, hit by Hurricane Harry.
"Now," Tajani explained, "the analyses and data from the Civil Protection Department will have to be prepared. We also discussed this with the Council of Ministers. It's right to proceed as we always have, and there has always been a generous response."
