A 26-year-old man died in Alessano, in the province of Lecce, while he was celebrating his birthday with some friends on the street, a few steps from his home.

According to the findings of the Carabinieri, the young man, Pierpaolo Morciano, had just taken the so-called “laughter drug,” or nitrous oxide. After inhaling the laughing gas from a “balloon” – as the balloons containing the substance are called – he felt ill.

The 118 emergency workers arrived on site but were unable to do anything to save him.

The body was taken to the Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce, the carabinieri are investigating.
