Rescue operation at sea yesterday evening off the coast of Ischia, where a Coast Guard patrol boat picked up and brought ashore the passenger of a ferry bound for Sardinia. A 70-year-old man who had boarded the Euro Palace departing from the port of Naples and bound for Cagliari felt ill, struck by sudden and severe pain in the abdomen while the ship was sailing about 10 miles south of the island of Ischia.
From on board, the distress call was received by the Operations Room of the Maritime Directorate of Naples, which took over the coordination of the rescue and alerted the SAR patrol boat in service with the Coast Guard of Ischia (which has personnel and means for emergency services at sea 24 hours a day, all year round).
The medical evacuation of the 70-year-old took place about 10 miles south of Sant'Angelo, in a sea area more sheltered from the wind and the sea, so that the CP 829 patrol boat (coordinated by the commander Antonio Magi) safely approached the ship and transferred the 70-year-old. The man was taken to the port of Baia and entrusted to the care of the 118 medical personnel already present on the dock; he is currently hospitalized in stable conditions at the Santa Maria delle Grazie hospital in Pozzuoli.
