She was hit and killed by a motorist while crossing a street in Fiumicino with her 8-year-old son, who was unharmed.
The accident occurred on Tuesday evening shortly after 10 pm, while the woman, Simona Bortoletto, 35, was returning home, on Via Redipuglia, in the Isola Sacra area: the victim was hit head-on by a Smart.
The 36-year-old driver stopped to provide first aid, but the victim died immediately after being thrown from the impact. The driver has been charged with vehicular homicide.
According to some witnesses, the accident occurred in a poorly lit area, and residents are calling it a "tragedy waiting to happen." The local police investigation is being coordinated by the Civitavecchia prosecutor's office.
