Police in Catania have arrested a thirty-year-old man who, in recent days, attempted to kill his partner. The man's father, recently released from prison, stabbed his ex-wife on the street in the Picanello neighborhood on April 3rd. She survived after undergoing delicate surgery.

The thirty-year-old is accused of violently beating and attempting to strangle his partner. The attack occurred while the woman was video chatting with some friends, who witnessed the initial stages of the assault and alerted law enforcement.

To gain entry to the couple's home, Catania Police officers had to call in the fire department because no one would open the door. Once inside, the police found the man in bed, pretending to be asleep, while the woman had a swollen face and obvious signs of injury. The victim was treated and then handed over to emergency medical services, who rushed her to the hospital emergency room by ambulance.

Initial medical examinations revealed signs of attempted strangulation, a fractured nose, and a head injury with a cerebral hemorrhage. After several hours, the woman's life was deemed out of danger, but she remained hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries.

From his friends' accounts, it emerged that the man had a morbid and suffocating jealousy toward his partner, with whom he had been in a relationship for less than a year, so much so that last February the police intervened at the couple's home for a case of domestic violence. In 2023, the thirty-year-old had been issued a warning by the Catania Police Chief for violence against another woman, his ex-wife.

The Catania Public Prosecutor's Office, with the magistrates' section of the specialized working group dedicated to crimes against gender violence, ordered the thirty-year-old's arrest. During the validation hearing, the investigating judge confirmed the order and ordered the suspect to be held in prison.
