A 53-year-old man, Marco Panichi, originally from Civitella Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, was arrested overnight on charges of stabbing his 36-year-old girlfriend to death in Vergiate, in the province of Varese.

After the crime, the man reached Avezzano, in Abruzzo, where he turned himself in at the Carabinieri station. According to initial reports, Panichi confessed to the murder before prosecutor Maurizio Maria Cerrato.

The victim, of foreign origin, was stabbed multiple times. The 53-year-old is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the circumstances of the crime.

The man claims he was defending himself from an attack by his partner, who allegedly wielded a knife. "He clarified many positions, saying that the attack didn't originate with him, but with the woman, who was extremely jealous," explained the 53-year-old's lawyer, Leonardo Casciere, outlining a reconstruction of the case that will need to be verified by investigators.
