The Court of Assizes of Rome sentenced Piero Bergantino to life imprisonment , the 78-year-old who killed his wife Caterina D'Andrea on 19 June 2022 with two gunshots in their apartment in via Pietro Mascagni, in the northern area of the capital .

The victim was 72 years old. After the murder, her husband, a retired insurer, went to his lawyer who contacted the police to confess to the crime.

The man always told the investigators that the first gunshot was fired by mistake . The two were at home, having just returned from the sea. He was handling the regularly held weapon when he accidentally fired a shot that hit his wife, who collapsed on the bed. Then a second blow, this last voluntary, "so as not to make her suffer" .
