Unable to afford a plane ticket, a Nigerian citizen allowed himself to be arrested in order to secure deportation and return home to be reunited with his family.

The story, reported today by La Prealpina, concerns a 36-year-old immigrant with a temporary residence permit and residing in the Varese area. He sends home to Africa much of the money he receives each month from the NASPI (National Social Security Fund) he receives after working for many years as a factory worker in Varese. His greatest desire is to return to his home country.

Unable to afford the return flight, he devised an alternative solution: on Friday, at the Varese train station, he lit a joint in front of railway police officers to attract their attention. When he was subsequently searched, they found 1.5 grams of hashish on him.

He was arrested, and when he went before a judge yesterday for sentencing, he was told that his sentence would be commuted to deportation. "Great," he reportedly said, "I did it!" Last March, he had already attempted to get himself repatriated by pretending to have a tantrum on a train and getting himself arrested.
