After running off the road in a small car, he attacked the Red Cross medical personnel who were helping him, then stole the ambulance in which they were taking him to the hospital and attempted to flee in it. The man, a 41-year-old Peruvian man , was chased and eventually arrested by the Highway Patrol on charges of improper robbery.

The incident occurred last night in Bologna, between the city section of the A14 motorway, where the accident occurred, and the Via Triumvirato roundabout, near Marconi Airport, where the man was finally arrested. After crashing into the highway guardrail, according to the Police Headquarters, a patrol car responded, finding the 41-year-old in a state of severe confusion and calling for medical personnel . Shortly thereafter, an Italian Red Cross team took him into care and loaded him into an ambulance, transporting him to Maggiore Hospital, a code yellow.

During the journey, the man became enraged, unbuckling himself from the stretcher and kicking at the paramedics, who were forced to stop near the Bologna-Arcoveggio highway toll booth. When the paramedics, frightened by the patient's aggressiveness, exited the vehicle, the man first damaged the ambulance, hitting the bodywork and knocking off a mirror. Then he climbed into the driver's seat and drove off.

After alerting the police, the ambulance was intercepted by the Highway Patrol near the 12th kilometer of the ring road, where the driver attempted to ram the patrol car, continuing to flee until junction 4bis, before being forced to stop at the Via Triumvirato roundabout. After exiting the vehicle, he attempted to flee on foot and, once he reached it, continued to threaten the officers, who had to activate their taser to subdue him, but did not use it.
