Filippo Turetta was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Giulia Cecchettin , his ex-girlfriend killed on November 11, 2023 in Fossò, in the Padua area, with 75 stab wounds. The aggravating circumstances of cruelty and the crime of threats were excluded.
In addition to the legal interdictions, compensation has been ordered for the civil parties with the payment of a provisional sum of 500 thousand to Gino Cecchettin, 100 thousand each to the brothers Elena and Davide, 30 thousand each to the grandmother Carla Gatto and uncle Alessio , in addition to the legal costs. The reasons will be filed within 90 days.
This is the decision of the judges of the Assize Court of Venice, who entered the council chamber shortly after 9:30 and left after more than six hours, around 16:00, to pronounce the sentence read by the president of the College Stefano Manduzio. Both the defendant and Giulia's father were present in the courtroom .
Turetta listened to the reading of the sentence with his head down and his eyes closed , without any visible reaction. Impassive, concentrated on the jury bench, Gino Cecchettin, who never looked away while the president of the panel Stefano Manduzio read the verdict.
The hearing, the fifth of the Turetta speed trial, initially included replies from the prosecutor and the civil parties to the defense's speech, but these did not happen. So the president Stefano Manduzio immediately declared the trial phase closed for the entrance into the council chamber.
GINO CECCHETTIN
" We have all lost as a society, no one will give me Giulia back. I am no more relieved or sad than yesterday ", this was Gino Cecchettin's hot comment. "Of course justice has been done, but the battle against violence against women continues, we must do more as a society. The path is made on other issues, on other benches. Gender violence must be fought with prevention, with concepts that are perhaps a little too distant. As a human being I feel defeated ".
THE REQUESTS
Turetta's defense asked for mitigating circumstances to avoid a life sentence, urged by the prosecutor who spoke of a crime "premeditated with cruelty" , which was especially burdened by that list of things to kill ( knives, scotch tape, shovel, black garbage bags, rope to tie ankles, under and above the knees, wet sock in her mouth to stop her from screaming ) drawn up by Turetta only four days before the crime, on November 7, 2023. In the defense's opinion, however, that list and the young man's modus operandi would have been proof of his "indecision" regarding the will to kill.
The prosecutor Andrea Petroni had also underlined, in his closing speech, how life imprisonment in our country is no longer an “end of sentence”, because there are institutions for alleviating the perpetual sentence, semi-liberty and conditional release .
THE HANDSHAKE
This morning, a handshake and a brief huddle in the courtroom between Gino Cecchettin and the lawyer Giovanni Caruso, Turetta's defender , after the controversy that followed the lawyer's speech, which according to Cecchettin had "humiliated Giulia's memory". "I understand her on a human level, but my job is not easy", the lawyer told him in a low voice .
