An explosion occurred shortly before 1pm inside the "Bar Bianco" mountain refuge in the Orobie Alps in Rasura, Valtellina, where the Ferragosto lunch was taking place.

According to initial reports, the explosion, perhaps due to a sudden gas leak, caused minor injuries to some patrons.

Rescue operations are underway, including by helicopter, by 118 health workers and the Fire Department. The Carabinieri are also on site to begin initial investigations into the causes.
