Tourists who want to arrive in Venice "surprise" will have to pay a 5 euro ticket from spring 2024. And register on a special online platform which will be valid as a booking for the trip, even if it is only for one day.

Naturally, guests who will stay in hotels, registered in advance and with tourist tax paid at the hotel, will be exempt.

The idea of the access fee was born on the basis of the "landing taxes" applied in some smaller Italian islands. The experimental phase could start from April-May 2024, and will target spring long weekends and summer weekends, around thirty hot days for the usual, predictable onslaught of holidaymakers.

Obviously, along with the Venetians, the categories - workers, students, professionals who work in Venice - who must cross the Liberty Bridge every day will also be excluded. All residents in Veneto are also excluded from payment, but not from booking on the portal.

The booking, they assure, will be entirely digital and simple. In the next few weeks the Municipality will present the portal in which to book and, for the categories envisaged, pay. With the registration procedure you will obtain a QR code, the real pass for the visit , which must be shown during checks. For those who do not have one, hefty fines, from 50 euros upwards .

The aim is to provide a deterrent to the indiscriminate influx of tourists who set off on August 15th and New Year's Eve despite knowing they will find a Venice already clogged with people . The definitive green light for the council resolution that established the regulation arrived last night in the municipal council with 24 votes in favour, 12 against, zero abstentions.

A heated session, which lasted over 5 hours, in which there were protests and expressions of dissent, both from citizens, with some committees who harshly criticized the mayor, and from minority parties. One of the points contested by those opposed to the ticket is that the provision does not set any limit number for access to the city on the lagoon .
