A 4-year-old girl died at Palermo Children's Hospital from suspected diphtheria. The child was reportedly unvaccinated.

The body was seized by the Prosecutor's Office, which, in addition to ordering an autopsy, will attempt to determine why the little girl had not received the mandatory vaccination and whether hospital procedures were correct.

The little girl had first been admitted to the hospital last Thursday with symptoms of fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite. After initial tests ordered by doctors, the little girl was discharged with a diagnosis of tonsillitis, while her parents were advised to return to the emergency room immediately if any problems arose. Two days after her discharge, however, her body temperature remained high despite the medication.

During the investigation, it emerged that the child had not been vaccinated by choice of the family. The child was then hospitalized again, and when her condition worsened, she was taken to the pediatric intensive care unit at the Di Cristina Hospital. There, she died. The hospital reported the case to the Palermo Prosecutor's Office, which, in addition to ordering an autopsy at the Policlinico's Institute of Forensic Medicine, delegated the Carabinieri to acquire the medical records to reconstruct the incident and determine any liability.
