The 36-year-old Moldovan carer who assisted Fernando Monte, the 82-year-old who was found dead last night in his home in Castrignano de' Greci, in the province of Lecce, is in custody and accused of murder.

The crime apparently occurred at the height of an outburst of anger provoked by trivial reasons. The elderly man was first hit with punches and then on the head with a blunt object. Bruises and signs of beatings were found on the body.

The tragic discovery was made by his daughter, who had gone to visit him. The carer was present in the house, he was in a confused state and was naked outside the door.
