"Acquitted because the facts were not established." This was the ruling of Siena preliminary hearing judge Andrea Grandinetti regarding the two young Italian fencers who went to trial under a fast-track procedure on charges of gang rape against a fencer of Uzbek origin.
The incident is said to have occurred during an international gathering in Chianciano Terme (Siena), between August 4 and 5, 2023.
The young woman was present in court and burst into tears as the verdict was read. The prosecutor had requested a prison sentence of 5 years and 4 months for both defendants.
"I can't believe things happened this way, but I'll get to the bottom of it for justice," the young athlete said in tears after her acquittal.
