She was afraid of him and feared for her life. Chamila Wijesuriya, the barmaid at the Berna hotel in Milan who was stabbed to death on May 9 by Emanuele De Maria, the femicide prisoner admitted to external work at the hotel, had understood that something in her relationship with her colleague was wrong. So much so that she talked about it with her colleagues and expressed her concerns.

The 50-year-old's fears, from what has emerged from the testimonies of her work colleagues, had been going on for some time and she had spoken about them with someone: all pieces collected by the investigators in the investigation by the Prosecutor's Office that is digging into possible underestimations and missed reports in the 35-year-old's path . From what has emerged, from the hearings of witnesses in recent days, in particular colleagues at the hotel, it has emerged that the woman had already said she was scared of De Maria's behavior and was already fearing for her life , so much so that she wanted him to distance himself from her .

The investigations, opened with a new file by the prosecutor Francesco De Tommasi, now aim to ascertain whether someone, such as the employer, who had the obligation to report to the prison, did not do so, so much so that, then, in the reports of the Bollate prison the 35-year-old was described, in practice, as a model prisoner: a totally balanced person, without mental disorders, and who had also built emotional relationships in the workplace.

For days, investigators have started a series of checks - in addition to the investigation for premeditated murder and attempted murder, conducted by the Carabinieri and the Police, and which will be archived due to the death of the offender - carried out as part of an independent file. An investigation that has also revealed some "manifestations", such as previous arguments and outbursts of anger, which have changed the picture of the model prisoner. Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio has also started inspection activities and has asked the Surveillance Court of Milan for an urgent report on the case and all the documents, including the two reports of the team of psychologists and educators of the prison from 2023 and 2024 and the provision with which Judge Giulia Turri approved the proposal for external work.
