A column of black smoke, preceded by some explosions, arose in the very early afternoon of today in the Eni refinery in Stagno, in the province of Livorno.

The smoke has long been visible from a great distance. "The windows shook", some residents of the area explain on twitter.

The mayor of the nearby town of Collesalvetti, Adelio Antolini, reports: "We were in the city council and they warned us about it. A column of black smoke is visible, which can also be seen from Collesalvetti, after they have heard they tell us at least three loud noises. ", similar to bangs.

The Civil Protection of the Municipality of Livorno, as a precaution, invited citizens to keep their windows closed.

According to initial information released by the Fire Brigade, the fire at the Eni refinery involved the “hot oil oven” inside the plant. "The fire has been extinguished and the cooling and reclamation operations are underway", it is explained, specifying that "no people are involved".

Teams from Livorno, Pisa, Lucca and Florence operated on the spot.
