Tragedy in Fregene, on the Roman coast.

A 72-year-old man of Sardinian origin, but a longtime resident of Lazio, suffered a sudden, fatal illness while on the beach with his family.

According to local press reports, the man was swimming a few meters from the shore when he fainted. Rescued by a lifeguard, he was brought to the shoreline, where he was given CPR until emergency responders arrived. Attempts to save his life, however, proved futile.
