Twelve people were arrested by the Carabinieri as part of an investigation, coordinated by the Potenza District Anti-Mafia Directorate, "into a transnational criminal network that operated by exploiting the so-called 'Flow Decrees', reducing numerous agricultural workers to conditions of modern-day slavery."
The operation is being conducted by Carabinieri officers from the Operational Departments of the Provincial Command of Potenza and the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Labour in Rome in the provinces of Potenza, Matera, Salerno, Piacenza, and Lecco.
A statement released by the Potenza Provincial Command of the Carabinieri specifies that "the military is executing a precautionary custody order, issued by the investigating judge of the Potenza Court at the request of the local Anti-Mafia Directorate, against 12 people held responsible, to varying degrees, for criminal conspiracy aimed at human trafficking, illicit intermediation, and labor exploitation."
