Fire and explosion at a munitions factory on the outskirts of Rome: firefighters in action

A fire followed by an explosion occurred this afternoon at the former Simmel Difesa plant, now owned by 'Knds Ammo Italy', in Colleferro, near Rome.
The company produces medium and large-caliber munitions for land and naval defense, as well as solid fuels for aerospace launchers. The accident apparently occurred in the powder pressing department, and no employees were injured: few were at work today due to the summer break.
Several firefighter teams are on site to secure the area, and the Carabinieri of Colleferro and the Frascati Investigative Unit are also present to investigate.
The Velletri Public Prosecutor's Office is proceeding with the crime of arson; the prosecutor on duty will shortly carry out an inspection .
In October 2007, a strong explosion had already occurred at the plant, then Simmel Difesa, which at the time caused one death and 13 injured workers.
