Flights at Catania Airport have been suspended until at least 4:00 PM due to ongoing activity on Mount Etna and the emission of lava ash from the volcano's northeast crater , which is also producing a 4-kilometer-high eruption cloud.

The Operational Coordination Unit (NCO), following the closure of the airspace in sector C1, ordered a restriction of zero landings and zero take-offs.

On Etna, the Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) is in effect, issued by the Catania-based National Institute for Geophysics and Volcano Volcano Observatory (INGV). This red alert is the highest level of alert on a scale of four.
