«I'm not just indignant , I'm shocked , saddened, also because I lived up to 13 years in that country, Hungary. This is why I was doubly struck by the medieval treatment of a woman who participated in an anti-fascist demonstration . There is no crime. The real problem is the climate in Hungary today."
The Hungarian writer who survived the concentration camps Edith Bruck explains this in an interview with Repubblica, where she comments on the case of Ilaria Salis. « Fascism and anti-Semitism are back. And so it's not that I'm very surprised by this treatment of Salis , but I still think it's an illegal procedure, which violates European standards", he adds, specifying that in his opinion the government "doesn't think it acted well".
« The Italian authorities should have intervened sooner to stop this monstrosity . Months ago, Ilaria Salis had sent a memorandum on her conditions. Why has this story only been talked about now?". «She was treated - explains Burck - like the last of the bandits without having committed anything serious. And this situation cannot be acceptable in any European country. Just as Italy's behavior is not, as it did nothing to bring this young woman back to Italy."
Finally, according to the writer, we must not forget that «Hungary was historically fascist. The Hungarians deported us Jews to the ghetto and then, after the war, they taught in school that it was the Germans who took us away - he concludes -. But it was the Hungarian gendarmes and fascists, who collaborated with the Nazis, who confined us before we were taken to the concentration camps."
