A complaint for an alleged case of medical malpractice was filed by the family of Immacolata Fiorentino, the 45-year-old who died on Epiphany at the "Bianchi" clinic in Portici, in the province of Naples, after undergoing surgery - gastric banding - at the Nuovo Policlinico in Naples.
The woman's brother, assisted by the lawyer Hilarry Sedu, reported the case to the Naples-Ponticelli State Police Station, reconstructing the ordeal experienced by the woman, who leaves behind three children.
According to the complaint, Fiorentino was operated on at the Nuovo Policlinico on November 22nd, but the operation was not completed due to problems that arose during the procedure, namely, as reported in the complaint based on what was reported by the doctors at the Policlinico, that the 45-year-old had suffered a pulmonary embolism followed by cardiocirculatory arrest, and for this reason she had been transferred to the intensive care unit, where she remained in a coma for 22 days.
Upon awakening, having overcome the acute phase and having averted any cardiac crisis, the woman was transferred to the sub-intensive care unit, where she remained until January 3, 2025, when she was transferred for rehabilitation to the Bianchi clinic in Portici.
Three days later, Fiorentino died, to the shock of her relatives, who believed she was recovering. Now it will be up to the judiciary to clarify, also because in the complaint it was reported that the doctors at the Policlinico gave different explanations about the problems suffered by the woman during the bandaging operation, speaking in addition to embolism and cardiac arrest, also of neurological problems suffered by Fiorentino while waiting for the surgical operation.
