The incident had gone unnoticed, because it was thought to be a suicide. In reality, the one against Nicoleta Rotaru, 37 years old, mother of two girls, was yet another femicide . And the carabinieri arrested the woman's ex-husband, Erik Zorzi, a 42-year-old truck driver who will have to appear in court on September 17.

The incident dates back to August 2, 2023 and occurred in Abano Terme, in the Padua area. The man called 118: "Come, my wife has been locked in the bathroom for a long time and I'm worried." The medical personnel who arrived on the scene, after breaking down the door, could only confirm the woman's death, with a strap tightened around her neck.

Everything pointed to suicide, but the police knew that house. They had already intervened, called several times by neighbors for the violent arguments of the couple . So the investigation began. Nicoleta Rotaru was still living with her ex because she would soon have a permanent contract. She was looking for a house and three days later she would leave on vacation with her daughters and her new boyfriend. Why would she have taken her own life?

The family and the new partner had also revealed the continuous and explicit death threats received by the woman. But a star evidence was needed to frame Erik Zorzi. And it arrived, it was in the victim's phone that in the last weeks before dying had started recording the violent arguments with her ex-partner. In the smartphone's memory the IT technicians found a chilling and complete audio of the crime . An irrefutable evidence, which led to the arrest of the truck driver.
