Cutro shipwreck: Six military personnel on trial for failure to activate rescue operations

The six military personnel, four from the Guardia di Finanza and two from the Coast Guard, involved in the investigation into the shipwreck of the Steccato di Cutro boat, in which 94 migrants, 35 of them minors, died on the night of February 26, 2023, have been sent to trial .
The decision was made by Crotone GUP Elisa Marchetto, following a preliminary hearing that lasted over ten hours. The six officers are charged with negligent shipwreck and multiple manslaughter in connection with their failure to activate the SAR (Search and Rescue Plan) on the night of the shipwreck .
The following will go on trial: finance officers Giuseppe Grillo , 56 years old, shift leader of the operations room of the naval air operations department of Vibo Valentia; Alberto Lippolis (50), commander of the Roan; Antonino Lopresti (51), tactical command officer and Nicolino Vardaro (52), commander of the naval air group of Taranto, and members of the Coast Guard Corps Francesca Perfido (40), inspection officer on duty in Rome, and Nicola Nania (51), who was on duty in the regional command of the Coast Guard of Reggio Calabria on the night of the shipwreck.
The preliminary hearing judge, in ordering the indictment, accepted the request made by the public prosecutor, Pasquale Festa. The trial, before the Crotone Court, has been set for January 14th. According to the prosecution, a series of negligence and underestimation contributed to the tragedy .
