Put in the attic the daily bulletin on the pandemic that has been with us for two years now and replace it with a weekly communication.

It is being discussed in the Scientific Technical Committee, which could soon bring its proposal to the government. Donato Greco , infectious disease specialist and CTS member told Rai Radio 1: “It is a natural transition, it would be an excellent idea. We at the CTS are discussing whether to talk about it with the government ”.

The debate is actually wider and also concerns, at a stage in which almost 90% of Italians are vaccinated, on the data to be provided.

"These methods of management must change, we must not continue to count as Covid patients those who are hospitalized for a broken arm and then test positive for the swab", the words of Matteo Bassetti according to which "we must do away with the evening report, which he says nothing and is of no use if not to make people anxious ".

"What sense does it make - continues the head of Infectious Diseases at the San Martino hospital in Genoa - to say that we have 250 thousand positive swabs? It is necessary to specify if they are asymptomatic, symptomatic, are hospitalized, stay at home". The important thing for Bassetti is " to know how many people enter the hospital with Covid pneumonia, today this virus for the majority of the vaccinated gives a form of flu and the hospitals are full of unvaccinated ".

Undersecretary for Health Andrea Costa agrees with Bassetti: "I proposed to Minister Speranza to reflect on the current reporting system, at this stage it is necessary to focus essentially on the data of hospitalizations and employment of intensive care units".

On the other hand, even the consultant of the White House Anthony Fauci affirms that "today it is much more important to focus on hospitalizations than the total number of cases".

But the virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco warns: "If we focus everything on hospitalizations and deaths, we risk falling behind with respect to the trend of the epidemic". And Undersecretary Pierpaolo Sileri himself , while admitting that "in this context, the data on hospitalizations, intensive admissions and deaths are more important than the mere count of positives, often asymptomatic", argues that "immediately, awaiting conclusive evidence on the transition from pandemic to endemic, timely and transparent communication of all available data is useful, accompanied by an adequate interpretation that helps citizens to better orient themselves in this new phase of the pandemic ”.
