A joke uttered from the stage at a Lazio fans' demonstration against president Claudio Lotito sparked a heated controversy on social media, prompting Pino Insegno to intervene to clarify his remarks.
The host of "Reazione a Catena," a huge Lazio fan, spoke last Thursday during the demonstration in Rome that brought tens of thousands of Lazio supporters to the streets to protest the club's current management.
In his speech, he spoke of his children's desire to return to the stadium: "They say to me, 'Dad, when are we going back to the stadium?' When we see two dates on Wikipedia." This allusion was interpreted by many users as a reference to the death of the Lazio president, sparking hundreds of outraged comments on social media.
Online reactions included those who called the joke in bad taste, arguing that "you can't wish death on someone," while others dismissed it as a simple provocation in the midst of the protests.
Contacted by Adnkronos, Insegno rejected any offensive interpretation of his words: "It was a joke. Is it really necessary to explain it? It seems obvious to me. I even spoke with Lotito; we don't joke about certain things."
When asked about the matter, Claudio Lotito preferred not to further fuel the controversy, simply replying: "I know nothing."
