Computer fraud after correspondence stolen from postmen, 4 suspects

A criminal group, residing in Emilia Romagna but operating throughout the national territory, dedicated to computer fraud and the illicit use of credit cards was vanquished by the Police who carried out 4 precautionary measures as part of the investigation called "The Jackals ". The offenses are aggravated theft, computer fraud, unauthorized access to the computer system and improper use of electronic payment cards. The suspects also passed off as police officers in order to obtain information in the Registry Offices and in banks to activate payment cards stolen from postmen.
Precisely from the theft of the correspondence insured and registered to the postmen, who found the forced trunk, the investigations arose
Often the stolen credit cards were already active, for example those renewed by expiry or those cards that do not require activation, and therefore immediately usable.
In other cases, the suspects, using sophisticated social engineering techniques, obtained the necessary sensitive data (cellular users, addresses, personal information), calling the civil status offices, the Municipal Police, banks, energy service operators and even in some cases, even posing as personnel of the Police Forces engaged in emergency services connected to the pandemic in progress. Numerous telephone calls to Public Offices, which emerged from the interceptions, to induce public officials in the exercise of their functions, to illegally access the personal data banks, to obtain personal data of the holders of the stolen cards, pretending to be Police Officers.
Once the information necessary for activating the stolen cards had been obtained, they generally misused them for the purchase of luxury goods or from compliant merchants.
Two offenders aged 45 and 42 both originally from Naples but residing in Cattolica ended up under investigation, having the role, respectively, of organizer of the criminal activity and of his "right hand man". It was also ascertained the involvement of the wife of the 45-year-old who intervened in the activities of activating the cards when it was necessary to use a female voice with the call center operators, and of the son.
