Cell phones will be banned in class, and those who violate them will face gradual sanctions, up to and including suspension . This is one of the new measures introduced for the school year, which begins next week.
"Sanctions must be gradual; the severity of the violation must match the severity of the sanction," explains Antonello Giannelli, president of the National Association of Principals . "There may be various types of sanctions, including a written reprimand, a type of censure, ranging from a warning to suspension. But other measures are not excluded, depending on the school's decision."
Fines will be necessary not only to enforce the ban but also because many schools, not knowing where to keep the devices, will allow students to leave them turned off in their backpacks . "In the vast majority of cases, the only option will be to keep the phones in their backpacks, not to use them. Therefore, if anyone is then seen with a cell phone in their hand, they will incur the violation set forth in their school's regulations," Giannelli specifies.
