Franco Amoroso, the 60-year-old cancer patient who, despite himself, became a symbol of the criticality of public healthcare, has died. A few days ago, he was forced to lie on the floor of the emergency room in Senigallia (Ancona) due to a lack of beds and stretchers. Yesterday, at his home, his already precarious health worsened, culminating in his death.
Originally from Treviso but a longtime resident of Senigallia, Amoroso was battling the recurrence of colon cancer. Although he was about to begin a new treatment at the Torrette Regional Hospital in Ancona, his worsening condition prevented him from accessing treatment in time.
His case broke after his wife Cecilia reported the situation, sharing her story of those dramatic hours spent waiting in the hospital: Amoroso, unable to sit still due to the pain, had to lie down on a blanket placed on the floor in the hospital corridor.
This incident prompted Giovanni Stroppa, director general of the Ancona Local Health Authority (AST), to issue an official apology and initiate an internal investigation. His widow firmly rejected these apologies. AST has announced that the results of the internal investigation, initially expected in the next few days, will be released at a later date as a sign of respect for the mourners.
