A targeted cyber attack targeted BBT SE, the company managing the design and construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. Austrian newspaper Tiroler Tageszeitung reported the news.
The company itself confirmed the incident to ANSA: "As soon as the incident was detected, the company activated its IT security protocols, immediately isolating the affected systems and engaging the support of external cybersecurity specialists to conduct the necessary forensic analyses. All required procedures have been initiated and the relevant authorities have been informed," BBT said.
The attack, which occurred on October 17, reportedly had no impact on the company's operations. BBT SE, the European joint-stock company responsible for the design and construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel, also stated that it has initiated all required procedures. The Bolzano Postal Police are investigating the matter.
The full extent of the hack and the amount of data stolen remain unclear. The company is maintaining strict confidentiality, refusing to comment on the possibility of negotiations with the hackers or a ransom payment.
According to the Tiroler Tageszeitung, among those targeted by investigators is the "Everest" group, linked to the Russian-speaking cybercrime scene. This international network specializes in cyber extortion, data theft, and threats to publish stolen information online, which it uses to demand money from victims in exchange for silence. The group has reportedly listed the Brenner Base Tunnel on its dark web platform, designating it as the target of an attack in Austria.
