Breaking point in the case of the death of Andrea Prospero, the 19-year-old boy found dead in an apartment in the center of Perugia last January 29, after five days of searching.
The Perugia Public Prosecutor's Office has issued an order for house arrest against an eighteen-year-old resident in the province of Rome for the crime of "incitement or aiding suicide" .
Prospero, originally from Lanciano (Chieti), was attending the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Perugia. He had recently rented an apartment, after having lived in a hostel.
The cause of death was a lethal mix of benzodiazepines and oxycodone . The young man's family immediately rejected the idea of suicide, suspecting that someone had killed Andrea or at least pushed him to take his own life.
In the boy's house, the agents found five cell phones, 60 SIM cards and three credit cards not registered to him . For this reason, the investigation immediately focused on his possible involvement in illegal computer activities. "Please, tell me who my son was," this was the appeal that the father launched.
The family members have maintained from the beginning that Andrea was involved in a situation that was too big to get out of. For this reason they now welcome this turning point in the investigation with "satisfaction". The arrest, comments the lawyer Francesco Mangano who is assisting them, "seems to confirm what we have always maintained" .
Andrea had confided on the Internet to a "virtual friend" about his anxiety and impatience with his university life . A choice, that of suicide, in which he would have been "repeatedly incited and encouraged" by the 18-year-old who ended up under house arrest. The arrested young man has no criminal record and belongs to an "absolutely normal" family background, according to the investigators. According to them , Prospero confided in him that he did not have the courage to commit suicide, receiving "further encouragement" .
The investigation documents include a dramatic Telegram chat, the one in which Prospero exchanged messages with the arrested 18-year-old in the moments immediately preceding the intake of the drugs: "From this we obtained the elements that allow us to believe that the young man placed under house arrest not only comforted and encouraged Prospero's idea of wanting to commit suicide but also encouraged him in the moments in which he was showing hesitation."
Furthermore, " the student's interlocutor, having learned that the drugs had been taken, instead of calling for help, was only concerned about the possible risks of being identified , following the discovery of the cell phone."
"In two months and therefore in a fairly short time, we believe we have identified the possible perpetrator of the assisted suicide. Even if obviously the presumption of innocence applies", said the prosecutor of Perugia Raffaele Cantone .
"A complicated investigation - Cantone explained - all done using the data present on the cell phones and computer equipment. Only the first piece. The investigation must in fact continue to understand a whole series of issues regarding the presence of SIM cards and multiple cell phones. And above all because this apartment was being used by a boy who did not seem to have any reasons for doing so ."
