An American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi in the early afternoon turned around while flying over the Caspian Sea, heading for Fiumicino airport, after hearing a suspected bomb threat.

Flight AA292 landed – without problems – at 17:22 at the Roman airport, on runway 1. As per procedure, once the 199 passengers and crew disembarked, safety checks began on board the Boeing 787.

The aircraft was seen approaching escorted by two military fighters . The State Police, with Border Police personnel, intervened to secure the passengers. Then the checks with dog units and bomb disposal experts gave negative results.

Of the 199 passengers, about sixty are non-Schengen citizens, without visas, who will be assisted at the airport this evening by the airline's handler and Aeroporti di Roma staff. The others will be housed in hotels, waiting for the flight to depart, which will presumably happen tomorrow.
