A 42-year-old man died in Reggio Emilia hospital after being stopped with a taser by police . Initial reports indicate that the man, known to law enforcement and a repeat offender, became enraged, and officers intervened using a stun gun to subdue him. He lost consciousness shortly thereafter. The incident occurred this morning in the hamlet of Massenzatico around 5:30 a.m. Attempts by emergency responders, who were immediately alerted, to revive the 42-year-old were unsuccessful : he died shortly thereafter at Santa Maria Nuova hospital.
Investigations are ongoing, conducted by the police themselves and coordinated by the Reggio Emilia Public Prosecutor's Office. Forensic investigations are also underway.
The victim's name was Claudio Citro, a resident of Reggio Emilia but originally from Salerno . He had several criminal records and had been implicated in a sting involving usury and extortion in recent years.
The Reggio Emilia Prosecutor's Office is investigating the timing and manner of the patrol's intervention, which encountered the 42-year-old. The incident appears to have been quite complex, with several phases involved. Inspections are also underway, and tests will likely be ordered to determine whether the man had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs .
Meanwhile, the controversy is reigniting: "Another Taser victim, what else must happen before this device is withdrawn from law enforcement agencies that have it?" These are the words of Filiberto Zaratti, leader of the AVS group in the Chamber of Deputies' Constitutional Affairs Committee . "We had already asked Piantedosi to intervene," he continued. "We insist again, and the Interior Minister must not say that there are no problems, because that would mean that the deaths are not a problem."
