The Bergamo Assize Court acquitted 29-year-old Monia Bortolotti from Pedrengo, accused of the deaths of her two children, Alice and Mattia, in 2021 and 2022.

The woman was acquitted in the death of her firstborn, Alice, "because the fact did not exist": according to the judges, there was insufficient evidence to establish that it was murder.

The outcome for the death of little Mattia was different, for which the defendant was acquitted due to total incapacity at the time of the events. She will remain in a REMS, a healthcare facility, for ten years and her condition will be evaluated every six months.

The Bergamo Prosecutor's Office had requested a life sentence and daytime solitary confinement. The woman was charged with the murder of her children, Alice and Mattia Zorzi, aged 4 and 2 months, who died on November 15, 2021, and October 25, 2022, respectively, approximately a year apart.

The prosecution claimed the woman killed them lucidly: she couldn't bear their crying and the burden of caring for them. The prosecution also alleged that the woman manipulated family members and psychiatric tests, giving distorted versions and misleading the case, without showing any remorse. The defense instead requested an acquittal or dismissal due to mental incompetence.
