But "I want to say one thing and it is the only reason that makes me break the reserve that I have imposed on myself in all these months: I am not leaving slamming the door". Elisabetta Belloni clarified this in an interview with Corriere, after the fuss unleashed by her farewell to the top of the secret services.

"The meat grinder I've been in these days requires me to clarify what happened and above all to clear the field of insinuations that are not so much harmful to me as to the country - she continues - especially in such a delicate moment". Belloni, who at various times in the country's history has been indicated as a possible candidate for the presidency of the Republic, says she understood that even with the new year "I would be back on the grill". Before the election of Sergio Mattarella to the Quirinale, her name was accredited by the center-right for the position. And even after the fall of the Draghi government, there were those who included her in the list of possible leaders of the new executive. It happened again in December, when the minister for the PNRR Raffaele Fitto was appointed vice president of the European Commission and rumors said that Belloni's designation in his place was imminent.

"My mandate expires in May and, when I heard rumors about my future and especially about my successor, I thought it was time to take a step back." Belloni emphasizes that he has addressed the issue with his institutional interlocutors, first and foremost Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Undersecretary Mantovano. Some rumors suggest that she will take up a role in the staff of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. But for now "nothing has been decided."
