Federico Patellani's famous photograph, which became a symbol of the victory in the referendum for the Republic on June 2, 1946, is among the elements chosen for the backdrop of the end-of-year speech by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, which will mark the 80th anniversary in 2026.

The detail emerges from the backstage video, in the Quirinale's glass-fronted room. The historic photo shows a smiling girl waving a copy of the Corriere della Sera newspaper, with the headline: "The Italian Republic is born." Over the years, that shot has been reproduced hundreds of times in books and posters.

And works of art, too. Like the one in the backstage images: the photo is topped by the Italian flag, with the words "June 2, 1946" written underneath.
